Meet the artist
Hello there! My name is Megan and I have loved art since childhood. From my younger days of using the textured tile bathroom floor in crayon masterpieces to today, I center a sense of play and experimentation in each craft and project.
I am a self-described dabbler, often juggling multiple projects, and multiple mediums simultaneously. I have always been drawn to tactile and multimedia aesthetics, and often mix soft serene, graphic, and illustrative perspectives in my own work.
Creative expression is my life source. Creative expression grounds me, brightens my interior, and is central to my joy and wellbeing. Whether it’s knitting, painting, or whatever craft I’m fixated on at any given time - creative expression always flows strongest for me when I can vibe off the ideas, interests, or desires of others. I love (Love LOVE) custom projects.
What is craftsmyn?
For many years I have self identified as “crafty”. I never felt comfortable identifying as an artist because I didn’t focus on the fine arts, and due to my experimental nature, I never rooted in one medium.
More recently I began hearing people identify as “creatives”, which I liked but ultimately felt was too broad for me.
Then I heard the word “craft” emerging from the DIY / IG Reels / Etsy-sphere. I liked the concept of craft because it implied an investment in developing and refining a skill and creating a product. Because I work in many mediums I played with the idea of craftsman, but to me '‘craftsman” sparked imagery of crafts historically dominated by man - leather work, wood work, carpentry, etc. That led to an epiphany.
Crafty is a feminized version of craftsman, in my mind, used to make light of the skill and value of say needlework, knitting, sewing, beading and embellishments, collage, etc.!
So, what is craftsmyn? Craftsmyn is my attempt to reclaim craft and to highlight/value/center the work of women & femmes. Craftsmyn is an expansive word, a shape-shifting concept, ultimately intended to address my internalized assumptions of who an artist is and what types of creative expression has value.
